Palestinian artists showcase folk culture through puppetry

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS) On a journey to retell the Palistinian folk tales and children's classics to the world, a group of artists that uses puppets for narration has reached Delhi.

The 15th Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival which is being held at the India Habitat Centre here is giving the audience a glimpse into the magical world of the Palestine folk culture.

A play, "Home Sweet Home", directed by artist Fairouze Fawzi Nastas brought up the heart-warming story of a seven-year-old boy Sami, who has no friends because he is physically challenged. His mother gives him an old book to read which transports him into an imaginary magical world where he finds new friends.

"Storytelling is an art; it was really hard for us to bring up this format and took a long time to develop this concept. Puppetry also involves a lot of energy and time but makes it easier to connect with the children," Nastas told IANS.

Performing in India was special for Nastas and her group because "it is rare for Palestinians to perform abroad".

"Through this project, we would like to show the world that the Palestine is equally rich in culture. It is special for us to be in this puppetry festival," she said.

Talking about the tradition of telling stories through puppets, Nastas pointed out that the political crisis has made a major negative impact on their lives.

"Puppetry once popular in our region has lost its attraction, but people are again showing interest in it," Nastas added.

The puppetry festival will conclude on February 10.
