Telecom panel seeks clarifications on telcos' penalty
New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) The Telecom Commission on Monday asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to seek further clarifications from the regulator about the Rs 3,050-crore penalty it slapped on three telcos for allegedly denying points of interconnect (PoI) to Reliance Jio, according to sources.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 3,050 crore on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular for not providing ample PoIs to Jio.

According to the sources, the panel has asked the DoT to seek clarification from the TRAI on 10-12 points.

The regulator recommended penalties after Reliance Jio complained that over 75 per cent of calls on its network were failing as existing operators were not releasing sufficient number of PoIs.

The TRAI in October recommended total penalty of Rs 3,050 crore on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea for denying interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio.

The panel on Monday also approved demand of Rs 2,834 crore to be raised from those telecom operators who provided services between the period February 2012, when the Supreme Court cancelled their licences, and till the time they procured fresh permits after buying spectrum in auction, the source added.
