New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) The Delhi High Court has imposed costs of Rs 10,000 on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Rs 30,000 on former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad for the delay in filing responses in a defamation suit.
Kejriwal and Kirti Azad, the suspended Bharatiya Janata Party MP, are facing the defamation suit filed by the District Cricket Association (DDCA) for alleged defamatory criticism of the club's functioning and finances.
Joint Registrar Anil Kumar Sisodia has directed Kejriwal to pay Rs 10,000 costs imposed on him to the DDCA. Azad shall pay Rs 20,000 to the DDCA and deposit Rs 10,000 with the Delhi High Court Legal Service Authority.
In its defamation suit against the duo, the DDCA sought Rs 2.5 crore each as damages from Kejriwal and Azad.
The High Court said their written statements to the suit will be taken on record on payment of the costs imposed.
In its defamation suit, the DDCA claimed that the allegations regarding financial irregularities and corruption in the selections made at the junior level were maligning its image.
