New Delhi, Feb 3 ((IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday alleged attempts, including by the PMO, to "suppress" the news of death of senior Kerala parliamentarian E. Ahamed and demanded a probe.
The opposition has been accusing the Narendra Modi government of deliberately keeping the news of Ahamed's death under wraps to ensure the Union Budget was presented as scheduled on February 1.
Raising the matter in Rajya Sabha, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged the involvement of the "highest office" in the country in the move to "suppress" the news of the Indian Union Muslim League MP Ahamed's death.
"I want a thorough and proper investigation into the manner in which the death of one of our very senior colleagues in Parliament, E. Ahamed, was handled," said Yechury.
"The way in which the news of his death was sought to be suppressed and there is interference, is what I hear, from the highest authority in the country, the Prime Minister's Office," he alleged.
"This is something that cannot be accepted," he added.
The Congress too slammed the government over the matter.
"It is a serious matter. There is a tragic death and you are trying to hide it from his family members just for a petty administrative issue - a Budget. This is very unfortunate," Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told the media outside Parliament.
"The Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League and people of Kerala are very angry and anguished," Tharoor added.
