EC bars top Punjab cop from assembly seat being contested by wife

Chandigarh, Jan 31 (IANS) The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered that senior Punjab Police officer Mohammad Mustafa would not be allowed to enter the Malerkotla assembly constituency, from where his wife, Razia Sultana, is contesting the February 4 elections on a Congress ticket.

Mustafa, a Director General of Police (DGP)-level officer, is presently posted with the Punjab State Human Rights Commission.

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer V.K. Singh told media on Tuesday that he was personally monitoring the situation at Malerkotla and has "advised DGP Mohammad Mustafa to stay at Headquarters till the polling date".

Singh said that Mustafa will, however, be allowed to cast his vote in Malerkotla, 110 km from here, if he is a registered voter there.
