New Delhi, Jan 30 (IANS) Observing the 69th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Monday screened a documentary based on the viewpoints of students on the issue of "academic freedom versus fascist diktats" across universities.
The documentary -- University Uprising -- was shown in universities in 22 states across the country. The movie was screened at many higher learning institutes including, ARSD, Venkateshwara College, JNU and Tibbia college in Delhi; and AMU, BHU, HCU among others outside it.
"Today marks the martyrdom anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who won us our independence. Ever since the BJP came to power, the RSS is on a mission to murder everything that he has ever stood for," Amrita Dhawan, National President of NSUI, said in a statement.
"In commemoration of his memory and the ideals he imbibed in us, we are releasing a documentary movie called University Uprising which is a compilation of voices of students from various educational institutions and their plight," she said.
The student wing of Congress Party, also touched upon high-profile incidents which have occurred in educational institutes lately, including Rohith Vemula suicide case, and the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, attributing them to Modi government's act of "undermining democratic freedom and crushing voices of dissent".
