Mike Pence dismisses Trump’s historically low approval

Washington, Jan 19 (IANS) US Vice President-elect Mike Pence has dismissed a new poll found that only 32 per cent of Americans have a favourable opinion of Donald Trump, a historical low for a President-elect.

The figures was issued on Wednesday by the CBS News poll.

"I have to tell you that the polls weren't always right during the election year. And so I'm a little skeptical about the polls going into inauguration," Pence said on Wednesday night.

"But I can tell you that the president-elect, and our whole team are ready to go to work, and really just advance the kind of policies that, to borrow his phrase, will make America great again," he added.

According to CBS News, no president-elect in US history has been rated that low since the network first polled the question in 1981.

According to the poll, Trump got more negative than positive marks for the handling of his Presidential transition. Forty-eight per cent disapproved of the job he is doing, while 37 percent approved.

CBS News Survey Unit Director, Anthony Salvanto said: "So we see Republicans very much in support of what Trump has done so far and approving of the transition, but Democrats very firmly set against it and that's not typical, usually we see voters from the opposing party giving a little more leeway to the incoming President."

The poll was conducted by telephone from January 13 to 17 among a random sample of 1,257 adults nationwide.
