Tamil filmdom joins hands for MGR’s centenary celebrations

Chennai, Jan 17 (IANS) The Tamil film fraternity has special plans to make the occasion of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and late actor M.G Ramachandran's birth centenary on Tuesday memorable.

MGR, as he was fondly known by his fans, was among the first south Indian actors to venture into politics via his AIADMK party and went on to become chief minister in 1977.

"It's not just a day to remember. We will celebrate throughout the year and we have planned events that will take place at regular intervals. To begin with, a grand inaugural ceremony is planned on Tuesday (evening) at Abirami cinemas where MGR's hit classic 'Ayirathil Oruvan' will be screened," filmmaker R.K. Selvamani, who is taking care of the celebrations, told IANS.

Having starred in over 100 films, MGR is still remembered for his performances in films such as "Vivasayee", "Adimai Penn", "En Annan", "Rickshawkaran" and "Ulagam Suttrum Valiban".

"Throughout the year, we plan to screen 136 films of MGR across different theatres in Tamil Nadu," he said, adding that more celebratory plans are being made.

Meanwhile, the hashtag MGR 100 has been trending on social media since Monday night.
