Uproar in J&K assembly over compensation to 2016 unrest victims

Jammu, Jan 16 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Monday witnessed uproarious scenes when opposition National Conference (NC) demanded clarification from the state government over the issue of compensation to the victims of 2016 valley unrest.

National Conference legislator Devender Singh Rana stood up in the house, supported by other members of his party, demanding clarification from the government over its decision to pay Rs 5 lakh to the families of each person killed in last year's unrest in the valley.

Rana wanted to know whether the ruling allies Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata party were on the same page over Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's decision to compensate the families of the victims of the unrest.

Rana said the BJP leaders had been issuing statements in public that those responsible for protests and for stoking trouble during the unrest should not be compensated in anyway.

Pandemonium continued in the house as Rana sought a statement on the issue from state Roads and Buildings Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri.
