Chandigarh, Jan 16 (IANS) Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel on Monday inaugurated the National Boxing Academy set up under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Haryana's Rohtak town, 70 km from Delhi.
Goel said that the union government has set a roadmap for the Olympics to be held in 2020, 2024 and 2028.
"This boxing academy would prove to be a good platform for Indian boxers," the union minister said.
He said that Haryana has produced boxers of international level in recent years and that is why the national boxing academy has been set up here.
Boxers like Vijender Singh, Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar, Rajkumar and Sumit Sangwan, all from Haryana, have brought laurels to the country at the international level, Goel said.
He said that keeping in view the interest of outstanding players of the academy, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, under which a profile of every player would be prepared.
"The record about standard of living, behaviour, physical and mental activities of players would be maintained to understand the impact of sports in a better way.
"Facilities like books, badminton court, volleyball court, chess and internet would also be made available at the academy," he added.
