Party organisational elections in Kerala need of hour: Chandy

Kochi, Jan 12 (IANS) Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday reiterated that the need of the hour is to hold organisational elections while denying media speculations that he has issues with his party high command.

Addressing reporters here, Chandy said that he received a call from All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Mukul Wasnik earlier in the day (Thursday) but since he was busy, he could not speak much and will get back to Wasnik.

"There are no issues in the party and I have not made any complaints. My only demand, which even Rahul Gandhi agreed to, is my need to hold organisational polls in Kerala, as that's the only way to strengthen the party. If I am called by the high command for a discussion to Delhi, I will certainly go," said Chandy.

Chandy has been sulking since last month, when the party high command appointed 14 new district Congress Presidents, ignoring many names suggested by Chandy.

He even failed to reach Delhi for two programmes organised by Rahul Gandhi, which included Congress leaders from all over the country.

With Chandy yet to make any public statements, he has taken a strong stance about not attending a meeting of the political affairs committee of the state unit of his party. After this declaration, the committee has not been able to meet.

With Chandy standing firm on his position, the call from Wasnik was to cool down his temper. All eyes are now on whether Chandy will take part in the much delayed Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting, which has now been fixed for January 14.
