Italy to reopen embassy in Libya

Tripoli, Jan 9 (IANS/AKI) Italy's Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone is due to submit his credentials and reopen the embassy here on Tuesday, the Libyan unity government announced.

"It will be the first embassy to reopen doors in Tripoli," Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala told a press conference in the Libyan capital with Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti.

Sayala said he had agreed with Rome that the embassy would issue visas for Libyans and that Italy would funds several projects in Libya "with special attention to the southern region," local media reported.

Libya and Italy also reached an accord on fighting illegal migration, Sayala said after meeting Minniti, local daily Alwasat tweeted.

Minniti told journalists that his visit aimed to coordinate cooperation in fighting terrorism and illegal immigration.
