New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government would introduce tax reforms to ensure that no honest taxpayer is harassed by by officials whileevaders are caught efficiently.
In an interview to India Today magazine, whose highlights were aired on India Today TV in text form on Thursday, he indicated that the tax reforms would reduce the scope of discretion for income tax department officials.
"The Revenue Department is already building a system where the entire process of assessment is done online without any need for the assesse to appear before the officer... selection of cases for scrutiny will be based on objective evidence rather than the whims and fancies of officers.
"The aim is to ensure that the honest tax-payer is not harassed or inconvenienced, while the dishonest tax-evader is efficiently caught and punished," Modi added.
