Panaji, Dec 29 (IANS) Ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, poll authorities have warned of a crackdown on self-help groups and NGOs which are used as conduits by political parties and candidates for distribution of money and materials in cash or kind, a statement said on Thursday.
"During this period there is a possibility that the self-help groups and NGOs could be made conduits by political parties and candidates for distribution of money and materials in cash or kind, thereby indulging in large scale malpractices which is a punishable offence under the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People's Act," the statement issued here said.
The warning has been issued to all self-help groups which are registered under the district rural development agency in both of Goa's districts, directing the organisations to not fall prey to "any illegal gratification through any mode prior to the enforcement of the model code of conduct, till the completion of the entire election process to have a free and fair election".
The model code of conduct is expected to come into force by December-end, the statement said.
