Delhi Cantt parade ground is now ‘Cariappa Parade Ground’

New Delhi, Dec 29 (IANS) Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh on Thursday dedicated the statue of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and renamed the Army Parade Ground at the Delhi Cantonment as "Cariappa Parade Ground", said an official.

"Army Parade Ground at the Delhi Cantonment has been rechristened as Cariappa Parade Ground in the memory of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army," said a Defence Ministry release.

It is customary in the Indian Army that parade grounds are named after eminent military personalities and war heroes. The Delhi Cantonment Parade Ground is one of the largest and most prominent parade grounds of the country.

In January 1949, General Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. In 1986, the President of India conferred on him the honorary rank of Field Marshal.
