Rs 3.86 cr in demonetised notes seized in Kolkata
Kolkata, Dec 23 (IANS) The Income Tax Department on Friday seized old currency notes worth Rs 3.86 crore after raiding a city-based businessman's office, an official said.

"After getting information from our sources, we raided a Gujarati businessman's office at Brabourne Road area (in central Kolkata). We have seized scrapped notes worth Rs 3.86 crore. The assessment will continue," an Income Tax official said.

The department on Friday also raided a businessman's office in Siliguri and his home in Rajarhat. "Nothing was seized in this operation but we have gathered information which is to be assessed to calculate tax obligation of the person," the official said.

 

In a joint operation with Enforcement Directorate, the income tax department raided 12-13 showrooms of a city-based jewellery house.

"The department raided the jewellery house's showrooms for the last two-day. The search ended on Thursday's late night. We have seized nothing but we found out Rs 160-170 crore of gold was sold in two-three days prior to the announcement of demonetisation on November 8. The bills were being verified," the income tax official added.
