Beijing to lift red alert with smog set to disperse
Beijing, Dec 21 (IANS) Beijing will lift the red alert for air pollution after Wednesday night as cold air was expected to disperse the smog that has lasted for several days, the city's pollution watchdog said.

The red alert, which has been in force since Friday evening, will be lifted on Thursday, said the city's heavy pollution emergency response headquarters on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Emergency measures such as car restrictions based on even-odd licence plate numbers will end and schools will resume classes.

Air quality will improve remarkably after midday on Thursday in Beijing, said the heavy pollution emergency response headquarters.

More than 20 cities in north China had issued red alerts for the latest bout of polluted air. Hundreds of flights were disrupted and many freeways closed due to low visibility in affected areas.
