Opposition slams crackdown on NGOs
New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) Prominent opposition MPs on Friday denounced "the politics of vendetta, victimization" by the government for axing the FCRA registration of NGOs critical of the government.

"The licenses had been earlier renewed showing that in the normal course these NGOs had fulfilled the criteria required for registration," they said in a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The decision to cancel the registration is therefore a decision motivated by the politics of vendetta, victimization and an effort to bully them to silence," the letter said.

The FCRA stands Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

The signatories to the letter included Sitaram Yechury of CPI-M, D. Raja of CPI, Ahmed Patel and Renuka Chaudhury of Congress, Premchand Gupta of RJD, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule of NCP and Neeraj Shekar of Samajwadi Party.

The letter went on: "In contrast, the government does not investigate a single RSS-affiliated NGO who collect huge amounts of money abroad and then use it to further a hate filled agenda.

"Selective targeting is abhorrent and anti-democratic."

The MPs demanded that the cancellation of licenses to NGOs like Sabrang Trust and others run by Teesta Setalvade, ANHAD, Lawyers Collective, Greenpeace India, Navsarjan Trust and RDRC should be revoked and these should be restored.
