Accra, Dec 10 (IANS) The candidate of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured that he would not let Ghanaians down after winning the closely contested presidential election on Friday.
Addressing party faithfuls at his residence in the capital, the 72-year-old lawyer and former Foreign and Justice Minister commended Ghanaians for the orderly manner in which they conducted themselves during Wednesday's general election.
"You are to be commended for the mature, peaceful and orderly manner in which you, once again, exercised your democratic franchise," Xinhua news agency quoted Akufo-Addo as saying.
"I will do my best to serve your interests, and put our country back on the path of progress and prosperity," the newly elected president added.
Akufo-Addo polled 5,716,026 votes or 53.85 per cent of the total valid votes, beating incumbent President John Mahama, leader of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who polled 4,713,277 votes or 44.40 per cent of the total valid votes.
He will be sworn in on January 7, 2017 as the fifth president under Ghana's fourth Republic.
