Panaji, Dec 8 (IANS) The BJP on Thursday said a "great deal of austerity" was observed at the wedding of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's daughter at Nagpur in Maharashtra on Sunday.
There is no ban on spending "genuine hard-earned" money on events, BJP spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao told the media here.
"When people are experiencing inconvenience, generally we expect all public representatives to be a little cautious. But in this particular case, he (Gadkari) is our top most leader. I think it was done with a great deal of austerity," Rao said.
"There is no ban on anybody spending genuine hard-earned money on any event. If somebody has a lot of money, I think no one can really question it. But if people are using money acquired through illicit means, unaccounted money, I think this is a matter of concern," the BJP leader said.
He said other people would have gone about such a function "on a much bigger scale", adding that BJP leaders are practising a lot of austerity.
Rao said reports of chartered planes ferrying guests to the wedding in Nagpur was hyperbole.
"It was all hyperbole; there is no truth to it," he said.
