Nairobi, Dec 4 (IANS/MAP) The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) was awarded the prestigious "Champions of the Earth" prize by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), in the category "Entrepreneurial Vision".
The award recognises outstanding environmental leaders, whether individuals or organisations, that have exemplified inspiration, vision, innovation, leadership and action for the environment the organisation's leadership in advancing solar power, making solar energy affordable and demonstrating the utility of innovative approaches to green financing, said UNEP in a statement.
"Masen's achievements come at a time when bold, ambitious and innovative action to achieve sustainable renewable energy is more urgent than it has ever been. The company has overcome significant financing challenges to bring affordable solar energy to Morocco," said the statement quoting Head of UN Environment Erik Solheim.
"Masen's success is an inspiration and a model for enterprises everywhere. They have shown that conversion to affordable renewable energy is not only possible, but beneficial for reducing overall energy costs for a country and its communities," it added.
This international award was established by UNEP in 2004.
