Demonetisation: Congress MP files breach of privilege notice against PM

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik filed a breach of privilege notice against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, for making statements on demonetisation outside Parliament, even when both the Houses are in session.

According to a statement issued by Naik, the notice has been filed under Rule 187 and 188 of Rules Of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).

"It was improper for the Prime Minister to make a statement on demonetisation outside Parliament when both the Houses of Parliament were in session," Naik said.

The lone Rajya Sabha MP from Goa also said that Modi's address at the public rally in Agra on November 19, where he commented on the demonetisation decision, violated the rules of parliamentary business.

"Further, the Prime Minister himself came on television on November 8, to announce the decision despite the fact that the Rajya Sabha debated the issue of demonetisation the whole day," Naik said.

"The Prime Minister did not think it necessary to come and attend the Rajya Sabha and intervene in the debate, thereby committing another breach of privilege of the House," he said.

The Opposition has been demanding a statement from Modi on the demonetisation issue and the Prime Minister is expected to make a statement in Parliament soon.
