Sonia Gandhi condoles Balamuralikrishna's death

New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday condoled the death of Carnatic music legend Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna who passed away here on Tuesday, terming his demise an "irreplaceable loss to music lovers".

In a condolence message to Balamuralikrishna's wife Annapurna, the Congress President said: "I am deeply saddened to learn the passing away of your husband Dr M. Balamuralikrishna."

 

"Balamuralikrishna's demise is an irreplaceable loss to music lovers, not just in India but in many parts of the world.

"Weaving an enthralling web of melody, harmony and spiritual force, he brought joy, solace and radiance into the lives of his audiences. His voice was unique in its combination of richness and range, soulful fervour and technical virtuosity," Gandhi said.

She added that Balamuralikrishna's music transcended the barriers of language and culture, and transported the listeners to a realm that evoked the highest and purest instincts of humankind.

"His music touched hearts and souls across generations, regions and nations."

The Congress President added that Balamuralikrishna left behind a "priceless heritage" in his compositions, in the bridges that he built between Carnatic and Hindustani music"

"India will always honour and cherish the memory of the legendary Balamurali 'ji' and strive to keep alive his legacy," she said.

The 86-year-old passed away in Chennai on Tuesday. He was ailing for some time.
