Kolkata, Nov 19 (IANS) To celebrate significant contributions of the male population to society, a car rally was organised in Kolkata on Saturday on the occasion of 'International Men's Day'.
A state based non-government organisation marshalled a colourful rally with 10 cars from Princep Ghat to Golf Green in South Kolkata. The rally was flagged off outside the Kolkata Press Club.
"We have organised the car rally to celebrate men's contribution to society which is often overlooked. A large number of men are victims of domestic violence. We have a national helpline that provides necessary help and counselling to these victims for free," said D.S. Rao, the founder of Hridaya Nest of Family Harmony that organised the event.
"There are very few organisations that openly talk about problems of men in our society. Our fight is against the apathy and indifference towards domestic violence, sexual harassment, gender discrimination and health issues that men face in today's society," Rao told a gathering before flagging off the rally.
"The men's day event is gaining a lot of attention nationwide. Next year we would have a bigger event as our first national meet would be in Kolkata," a participant in the rally said amid cheers of 'Happy Men's Day'.
