Kolkata, Nov 13 (IANS) Stray incidents of violence and frayed tempers were reported from West Bengal on Sunday as people got impatient over the cash crunch after the November 8 demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
Serpentine queues were witnessed at banks and ATMs on Sunday as people continued to throng these premises to get cash in new notes of Rs 2,000 denomination or Rs 100.
Closure of several automated teller machines only aggravated the situation and staff of banks faced cash crisis amid increasing demand even on Sunday.
Reports of crowds of people agitating outside banks poured in from different districts as they were not able to deposit, exchange or withdraw money even after waiting for many hours.
Additional police was deputed at several banks in and around Kolkata amid fears of trouble.
In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, police lathi-charged a mob outside a closed ATM.
"The crowd, waiting for hours since morning to withdraw money, could not control its anger as the ATM was declared out of cash," an eyewitness said.
In Kolkata's Topsia area, an angry crowd blocked the road and damaged a roadside fencing after people failed to get cash from a private bank even after a long wait. Police rushed to the site remove the blockade and control the situation.
