Delhi Metro records over 100% spike in Rs 1,000, Rs 500 recharges

Delhi Metro records over 100% spike in Rs 1,000, Rs 500 recharges

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) The Delhi Metro on Wednesday registered an almost 100 per cent or above increase in the number of recharges of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 in its smart cards used by customers.

The number of commuters who recharged their cards on Tuesday for Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 was 111,103, 25,015, and 539 respectively.

The number of Rs 500 recharges till 7 p.m. on Wednesday increased by almost 125 per cent with 58,902 recharges, while the number of Rs 1,000 recharges shot up by almost 100 per cent with 966 recharges.

The number of recharges of Rs 200 saw a sharp 60 per cent decline with 41,960 recharges on Wednesday evening.

As a result of the chaotic cash crunch following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on Tuesdays, daily Metro commuters apparently thought it wise to get their smart cards recharged with such notes than getting them exchanged from banks and post offices later on.
