Congress condemns government for tarnishing Indira's image

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday condemned the BJP-led NDA government for allegedly making attempts to tarnish former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's image.

It passed a resolution recalling Indira Gandhi for her contribution to nation building and her sacrifice, and condemned the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for "belittling her life and work".

After the CWC meeting, Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala told the media: "Indira Gandhi was a mass leader and one of the most popular leaders in the country. The CWC condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party's ongoing wicked attempts to tarnish her image."

"CWC notes with regret that the NDA government, instead of acknowledging Indiraji's enormous contributions and sacrifice, is attempting to belittle her life and work and disrespecting her memory only because she was a tall leader of the Congress," read the resolution.

The Congress has decided to hold year-long celebrations and mark the birth centenary of Indira Gandhi in a big way on November 19.

"CWC calls upon Congressmen and women to commemorate Gandhi's Centenary in a befitting manner to respectfully acknowledge her contribution, leadership and martyrdom, and appeals to the people of India to join the nationwide celebrations during the centenary year," the resolution read.
