Unsafe 11-storey building demolished in Chennai

Chennai, Nov 2 (IANS) An 11-storied building, declared unsafe by the Supreme Court, was safely demolished on Wednesday evening using detonators and 'implosion technique' after elaborate safety arrangement by police.

The structure was part of a twin tower residential apartments under construction of which one came down in June 2014 killing 61 people.

In May 2016, the apex court ordered demolition of the building as it was unsafe.

The residential project Trust Heights was being developed by Prime Sristi Housing Pvt. Ltd. The project comprised two 11-storey blocks - The Belief and The Faith.

One of the two towers collapsed June 28, 2014, killing 61 and injuring 27.

On Wednesday, people residing within the 100 metre radius of the demolished building were asked to move out to a marriage hall were necessary arrangements were made.

Police blocked the roads leading to that area and a holiday was declared for some schools in the area.

Several curious people turned up to watch the demolition - the first of its kind - in Tamil Nadu.
