Rahul blames Modi government for detention of ex-serviceman's kin

New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday blamed the Narendra Modi government for what he said was "detention" of the kin of an ex-serviceman who committed suicide and said "it is not the way to govern the country".

Gandhi, who was released from the Tilak Marg police station after his detaintion twice during the day, said he wanted to meet the bereaved family of Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal (retired) to share their pain but was not allowed to do so.

"It was the most difficult day for the family (of the Army veteran) but they were detained by the police for the entire day. I tried to meet the family but all four gates of the (Ram Manohar Lohia) hospital were closed," he said.

"The government must apologise to the family for its action (of detaining them). This is not the way. And this is not the way to govern India," the Congress leader said.

Gandhi said the detained family members were manhandled and beaten by police before they were whisked away to a police station.

"I said to police: If you arrest me I don't have any problem, but why detain the family members of the ex-soldier?" Gandhi said.

Delhi Police reports to the Home Ministry.

Grewal, 70, formerly of Rajputana Rifles, allegedly took poison at a park here on Tuesday evening over the demand for the immediate implementation of the One Rank One Pension scheme.
