Every market to get Rs 10 lakh to set up waste management system

New Delhi, Nov 2 (IANS) The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has decided to provide Rs 10 lakh for every 'mandi' (market) for setting up waste management plants under e-Nam scheme, and to spend one per cent of the fund under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) on solid and waste management.

"Cleaning drives were undertaken in 271 agricultural mandis. Further, Swachhta Action Plan has been prepared, in which it was decided to make provision of Rs 10 lakh for each mandi for setting up waste management plants under electronic national agriculture market (e-NAM) scheme," a statement said.

"It was also decided that under one flagship scheme, namely RKVY, one per cent funds will be spent on Solid and Waste Management," the statement added.

All three departments under the ministry -- Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries and Department of Agricultural Research & Education -- observed 'Swachhta Pakhwada' (Cleanliness fortnight) from October 16-31.

'Swachhta Pakhwada' is being held by every ministry on different occasions under the 'Swacch Bharat Mission', a flagship programme launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi two years ago.

Activities like cleanliness drive, installation of sensors in toilets, installation of motorised grinders, removal of unwanted records and encroachments were carried out during the fortnight.
