Modi’s Sandesh2Soldiers drive draws over 10 lakh messages


New Delhi, Oct 28 (IANS) Over 10 lakh messages have come in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "#Sandesh2Soldiers" appeal, with several prominent figures including cricketer Virat Kohli, businessman Anand Mahindra and actor Aamir Khan sending their Diwali wishes to soldiers.

Over 10 lakh messages have already come in via different mediums, officials said.

They said about seven lakh people have written through Facebook, Twitter and MyGov site, while approximately three lakh people have written on Narendra Modi App.

"People from all parts of the country and all walks of life are writing their messages to the jawans on the festive season," an official said.

The Prime Minister had shared a special video and made an appeal to the nation to remember the soldiers, many of whom are guarding the frontiers away from their families on Diwali.

Prominent people who have sent their wishes include actors Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Anupam Kher, singer Kailash Kher, cricketers Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, wrestler Sakshi Malik and businessman Anand Mahindra.

Many celebrities have sent video messages to convey their emotions. Many chief ministers, cabinet ministers and parliamentarians have also written to the soldiers.

Doordarshan and All India Radio are running programmes daily to convey people's messages to the armed forces. Officials said that several other TV channels have also taken initiatives towards this campaign.
