Powell to only grace Delhi half marathon

New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Jamaican 100 metre sprint great Asafa Powell will not participate in but grace the ninth edition of the Airtel Delhi Half marathon to be held on November 20 here.

Powell, who expressed his delight with his first India visit, will only grace the event, which will kick off from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, a spokesperson said.

 

Asafa said in a statement: "I am absolutely delighted to come to India and be a part of Delhi's iconic half marathon.

"I've always wanted to take in the historic sites in India and Delhi being the capital city is the perfect place to do just that.

"I am extremely pleased to see the astounding response and participation from the people of Delhi. I am looking forward to my India visit and am positive that it will be the first of many more to come," he added.

Revered for holding on to the 100 metres world record between June 2005 and May 2008 clocking 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, he is remembered for his memorable performances in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

The Jamaican has consistently clocked sub-10 second timings in 100m with an impressive record of achieving it 97 times.

Promoted by Procam International, the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon will see over 34,000 participants including world class Indian and international athletes, professional and amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts.

ADHM, one of the fastest half marathon courses in the world offers runners a beautiful glimpse of the historic city, passing renowned landmarks like Parliament House, Rajpath, India Gate, Delhi Golf Club and Lodhi Road.
