Global Education Summit to kick-off Presidency’s bicentenary


Kolkata, Oct 19 (IANS) The Presidency University here will kick-off its year-long bicentenary celebrations on January 5 next year with a Global Education Summit highlighting the future of higher education, its Vice Chancellor said here on Wednesday.

"We will host a Global Education Summit where our desire is to discuss the future of higher education. Under this global umbrella, we will discuss future of natural and social sciences, humanities and languages, different aspects which lead to amalgamation of higher education. We have invited a series of people who are leaders in their fields, including many who are alumni," said Vice Chancellor Anuradha Lohia.

The discussions and lectures will continue till January 20, the Founder's Day.

Among the noted speakers from India and abroad is Nobel laureate in economics Jean Tirole.

In addition to lectures, a heritage walk from Swami Vivekananda's residence to the varsity will be organised.

"We will also create a museum space to feature the history of Presidency in parallel with the history of Bengal and will also create an exhibition space," Lohia said.

The varsity also unveiled a special logo with the theme "200 years ahead" to mark the bicentenary.

"We have received enormous funds from the West Bengal government. The state government has given us Rs 50 crore to renovate the heritage campus and Rs 10 crore for the celebrations and infrastructure," said Lohia.
