BRICS’ Goa Declaration ‘abject failure’ of government: Congress

BRICS' Goa Declaration 'abject failure' of government: Congress

New Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) The Congress on Monday termed the Goa Declaration of BRICS an "abject failure" of the government as there was no mention of the word "terror" in the condemnation of the Uri attack and no reference to Pakistan.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said the Goa Declaration of BRICS was "the most troubling example of the government's absolute and abject failure".

"Despite all the rhetoric and the laser sharp discourse on terror and isolating Pakistan, what you have is one sundry remark and it says -- 'we strongly condemn the recent several attacks against some BRICS countries, including that in India'," said Tewari.

Tewari said the Narendra Modi government was "not able to convince the interlocutors" that the September 18 attack on the Uri army camp was a terror strike. "Even the word terror does not find mention in this condemnation," he added.

Tewari said that while the declaration had mention of "everything from the ISIS to Syria, to Afghanistan, to the Israel-Palestinian question, where is the reference to Pakistan in the entire Goa Declaration?"

"There is a long distance between the rhetoric and the substantive action of this government," he added.

Tewari said in the Goa Declaration, "there is a subsequent line which says 'We condemn all forms of terrorism', and then goes on to say that there can be no justification religious, ethnic or political etc."

The Goa Declaration was adopted at the BRICS -- Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa -- summit on Sunday.
