A gaze at danseuse Shovana Narayan's journey

New Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS) Iconic dancer Shovana Narayan has given new dimensions to Kathak, imbuing it with dignity and brilliance, and has taken it to unprecedented heights across the world. A documentary on her life is all set to be released here in an upcoming event.

The documentary "Born to Dance", has been produced by Ashok Kumar Taneja and directed by Beenu Rajpoot. It will be released and screened on October 11 at India International Center.

"Movies touch our hearts and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. They take us to other places, they open doors and minds. Movies are the memories of our lifetime; we need to keep them alive," Rajpoot said.

"Being inspired by her contribution in India's cultural heritage, I have tried to capture glimpses of her journey of dance," she added.

"I am myself a lover of Indian classical dance Kathak and therefore wished to contribute to this art form," she said.

The documentary, in English, runs for 41 minutes and 31 seconds and took one-and-a-half years to complete.

"Through this documentary I have tried to put forward a strong message to the society about devotion, soul and beauty by showing Shovana Narayan's persona as a dancer, her intense passion and elegance," the director said.

"No art can pass our conscience in the way film does, and that goes directly to our feeling. Kathak dance is related to Katha, which means -- the art of storytelling, which is a prominent characteristic of a director," she added.
