Kolkata, Oct 5 (IANS) Inaugurated by visually impaired children on Wednesday, a Durga Puja marquee (pandal) in north Kolkata has been themed to pay homage to the martyred soldiers in the deadly Uri terrorist attack.
"We have named the mancha (stage) in honour of the soldiers. It's called Shaheed Jawaan Mancha'," A. Dutta of the Young Citizens Club said.
For 37 years, the relatively small-scale Durga Puja here has resolutely stayed away from the lure of themes and celebrity launches and veered towards social welfare.
In keeping with its tradition of making citizens socially conscious, the club indulged as many as 30 visually impaired kids during the day, courtesy treats and gifts.
"The puja is organised in the traditional 'Shabekiana' concept. We have a budget of Rs 5 lakh this year and this is all through donations from our members and residents," he added.
