Amritsar/New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) The Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday seized an empty boat belonging to the Pakistan Rangers after it drifted from across the border into the frontier district of Amritsar in Punjab, a senior BSF officer said on Tuesday.
The boat, painted in green and carrying a Pakistani flag, was washed into the Indian territory by the Ravi river that flows into India from across the border.
He said the boat will be returned to the Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday.
"BSF troops deployed in forward area observed a boat coming from the Pakistan side in the Ravi at around 4.45 a.m. today (Tuesday). BSF troops stationed at the ferry point of Border Out Post Rear Kakkar seized the boat," BSF Deputy Inspector General R.S. Kataria said.
"A thorough check of the surrounding area revealed nothing suspicious. A flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers was held, wherein they accepted that the boat belonged to the Rangers New Balam BOP and had drifted into India side. It will be handed over to Pakistan Rangers on October 5," the DIG said.
The boat seizure comes amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control.
BSF Director General K.K. Sharma said: "There was excessive water flow in the Ravi, due to which the boat accidentally drifted to the Indian side."
The Indian Coast Guard on Sunday apprehended a Pakistani boat with nine crew off the Gujarat coast.
