10 killed as bus falls into river in MP

Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh), Oct 2 (IANS) At least 10 persons, including two children and four women, were killed and 18 others injured when a bus fell into a river here on Sunday, police said.

Transport Minister Bhoopendra Singh Thakur ordered an enquiry into the accident and sought the report within 24 hours.

Chief Minster Shivraj SIngh Chouhan expressed grief and announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of each of the deceased.

Rescue operations were on to save more of the passengers travelling in the bus from Shamshabad to Lateri.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Dharmendra Chaudhary told IANS that the bus fell into the Sapan river in Vidisha district on Sunday afternoon.

The bus has been recovered from the river, the police added.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus was carrying more than 30 persons.

The bus driver and the conductor fled the spot.
