Taiwan issues warnings for typhoon Megi

Taipei, Sep 26 (IANS) Taiwanese weather authorities on Monday issued land and sea warnings as typhoon Megi approached the island.

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said the typhoon will affect eastern Taiwan with a wind speed up to 54 kph on Tuesday through the eastern Hualian district before crossing over to the west, EFE news reported.

Taiwan will be affected on Monday and Tuesday with strong winds and heavy rainfall, according to the CWB.

Megi is moving towards the island at a speed of 21 kmph with a wind speed up to 180 kmph.

It has a radius of 220 km, and within 80 km of the typhoon, the wind speed is more than 90 kph.

The sustained wind speed reaches as high as 144 kph with wind gusts of up to 180 km.

The government has already put in place measures to limit potential havoc by deploying the army and the Central Emergency Operation Centre to key sites, as well as ordered evacuation in areas at risk of flooding.

Earlier this month, Taiwan was hit by typhoon Malakas and super typhoon Meranti, which left one person dead and injured dozens.
