Margao, Sep 26 (IANS) The logo of the first BRICS U-17 football tournament, to be held here in October, was unveiled by Union Sports Minsiter Vijay Goel here on Monday.
A government of India initiative, the tournament will be played amongst the five BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The tournament will commence on October 5 and will witness two matches every alternate day.
The dates of the tournament have been coordinated to culminate with the eighth annual BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to be held here.
In his address at an ceremony held at Bambolim Stadium, Goel said this tournament would be a precursor to the forthcoming U-17 Football World Cup to be hosted by India in six cities in October next year.
The tagline of the BRICS U-17 logo is "India for Football" which symbolises the impetus being given to the game.
The minister will be attending the opening of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Congress and the launch of the U-17 Football World Cup logo and emblem here on September 27.
About 250 players and officials from five countries are expected to arrive for the BRICS tournament, the final of which will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on October 15.
