Myanmar government allows 143 former citizens to resume citizenship

Nay Pyi Taw, Sep 24 (IANS) Myanmar government has allowed 143 former citizens taking foreign citizenship to resume their citizenship in accordance with law, authorities said on Saturday.

Minister of Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe told parliament members that the 143 people were granted out of 198 applicants for resuming their Myanmar citizenship since 2013, Xinhua news agency reported.

The remaining applications would be processed, he said.

Myanmar's former government introduced a permanent residence system for overseas nationals taking foreign citizenship to return and stay back in Myanmar permanently to enable them to do their businesses.

The system also applies to foreign technicians and investors, U Thein Swe said, adding that permanent residency was granted to 264 out of 319 foreign applicants from January 2015 to August this year.
