New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS) Israel's Ambassador to India Daniel Carmon on Friday paid homage to Indian soldiers at Teen Murti, a memorial raised in the memory of those cavalry troops who fell while securing victory of Haifa during World War I.
The memorial, located near the Teen Murti Bhavan in New Delhi area and a stone's throw from Rashtrapati Bhavan, was built in 1922 to mark "victory of Haifa" in which soldiers of the British Indian Army took part. Haifa is a port city in northern Israel.
A seminar was also organised by the Indo-Israel Friendship Forum at the Teen Murti Bhavan, in which the Israeli envoy highlighted the significance of the victory of Haifa in the relationship between the two nations.
Speaking at the seminar, Carmon said that people of India and Israel were connected in various ways. He said 2017 will be the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries but their relations go back to the 1940s.
"The victory at Haifa led to creation of Israel and sacrifices will not be forgotten in India or Israel," he said.
Haifa was under the Ottoman control since 16th century and was one of the last fortified strongholds of the Ottoman army. The 15th Cavalry brigade of the British Indian Army was deployed during the "Palestine campaign" in World War I to capture Haifa.
