Panaji, Sep 22 (IANS) The Congress on Thursday criticised Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar remarks for threatening to "bring out weapons" against those protesting setting up of mobile towers for the upcoming BRICS event.
The party condemns the use of such aggression by Parsekar, especially when it comes to civil society protests, party Congress spokesperson Sunil Kawthankar said at a press conference here.
"This is most unbecoming of a Chief Minister to threaten to use 'weapons' against people protesting against mobile towers for BRICS. The protestors are using legitimate means of protest... intimidating them is a crime," he said.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Parsekar said that he was "pained" to hear about village panchayats members' plans to oppose mobile towers for the upcoming BRICS meet in the state.
"The protestors should reconsider their position, or we will have to come out with weapons," he said, adding setting up mobile towers is essential for a smooth communications network for the international event.
Kawthankar also said that the party would file a police complaint and submit a written representation to Governor Mridula Sinha.
