Trinamool captures Berhampore Municipality from Congress

Kolkata, Sep 18 (IANS) West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Sunday captured Congress-controlled Berhampore Municipality in Murshidabad district as 17 councillors including the Chairman Nil Ratan Adhya switched sides.

"Trinamool has now obtained 18 seats out of 28 in Berhampore Municipality and comfortably crossed the magic figure of 15. The unholy-nexus between CPI-M and Congress will be shattered in the coming days," Trinamool Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee told reporters here.

Earlier this year, Trinamool snatched away the Beldanga municipality from the Congress and Jangipur and Ziaganj-Azimganj municipality from the Left Front.

Congress lost control of Berhampore after three decades and is left with just two municipalities - Murshidabad and Kandi - in Murshidabad.

However, Trinamool is confident of capturing these two municipalities too. "I am confident. We will get hold of two more municipalities in Murshidabad within a month. Congress and CPI-M will become insignificant political powers in Murshidabad," Banerjee said.
