New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday postponed his visit to the US and Russia over the present unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and asked officials to closely monitor the situation in the state after the terror attack in Uri earlier in the day.
"Keeping the situation of Jammu and Kashmir in mind and in the wake of the terror attack in Uri, I have postponed my visits to Russia and the US," Rajnath Singh said in a series of tweets.
"I spoke to Governor (N.N. Vohra) and Chief Minister (Mehbooba Mufti) of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the terror attack in Uri. They have apprised me of the security situation in the state," he said, adding "I have given instructions to the Union Home Secretary (Rajiv Mehrishi) and other senior officers in the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) to closely monitor the situation."
Two soldiers were killed and six others injured when militants attacked an army camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri town on Sunday morning, defence sources said.
The sources said the six injured soldiers were airlifted from the border town to the army's base hospital in Srinagar city.
In an effort to discuss India's campaign against terrorism along with Islamic State activities and the role of neighbouring Pakistan in fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir, the Home Minister was scheduled to visit Russia and the US for a five-day tour beginning on Sunday.
