Two chikungunya deaths at AIIMS, toll touches 12

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday confirmed the death of two men suffering from chikungunya, taking the toll by the vector- borne disease to 12, said hospital authorities.

According to the hospital, the two men -- aged 50 years and 30 years -- were admitted to the hospital with kidney problems.

 

The hospital said that their samples were tested positive for chikungunya, which triggered their chronic kidney problem leading to their deaths.

Both patients died on September 13.

Earlier on Wednesday, city based Indraprastha Apollo Hospital also confirmed the death of five elderly patients, who were suffering from chikungunya.

Another city hospital -- Sir Ganga Ram -- had witnessed the deaths of four patients suffering from chikungunya.

The first death caused by health complications triggered by chikungunya was that of a 22-year-old woman on September 1 at Bara Hindu Rao Hospital.

Municipal Corporation data said the number of dengue, chikungunya and malaria infections stands at 1,158, 1,057 and 21 respectively.

According to the civic bodies, the highest number of dengue cases was reported in 2015 with a total of 15,876 people infected by the vector-borne disease with 60 deaths.
