New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday congratulated Mariyappan Thangavelu on winning a gold medal in the men's high jump T-42 event and Varun Singh Bhati for clinching the bronze medal at the Rio Paralympics.
"India is elated! Congratulations to Mariyappan Thangavelu on winning a gold and Varun Singh Bhati for the bronze at the Rio Paralympics," Modi tweeted
Mariyappan Thangavelu created history on Friday night by winning a gold medal in the men's high jump T-42 event at the Rio Paralympics.
His compatriot Varun Singh Bhati clinched the bronze medal at the same event.
Defining this victory as an 'extraordinary achievement' Sonia Gandhi said: "History has been created today. Outstanding lives and games of these athletes will inspire generations to come."
