Pakistan carefully monitoring India US defence pact

Islamabad, Sep 8 (IANS) Days after India and the US signed agreement on sharing military logistics, Pakistan on Thursday said that it was "carefully monitoring" the development between the two "sovereign states".

The agreement between New Delhi and Washington was termed as a major step forward in closer bilateral defence cooperation, though both sides clarified it will not involve setting up of military bases.

Pakistani Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakariya told the media that "Islamabad is carefully monitoring the evolving regional and global situation".

He said that the country would make course corrections in its foreign policy "as and when required".

The agreement, viewed as part of the Obama administration's Pivot to Asia strategy, was criticised by a leading Chinese state-run daily, which warned that New Delhi may irritate Beijing if it "joins the US alliance system".
