16 new cases of Zika virus confirmed in Singapore

Singapore, Sep 5 (IANS) At least 16 new cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus infections were confirmed by the authorities here on Monday.

The country's Ministry of Health (MOH) said among the-newly reported cases, 11 are linked to the Aljunied Crescent, Sims Drive, Kallang Way and Paya Lebar Way clusters while one is linked to the Joo Seng Road cluster. The other four cases have no known links to any existing cluster, Xinhua news agency reported.

In a separate statement earlier on Monday, the Health Ministry said it will no longer require suspected Zika cases to be isolated while waiting for test results from Tuesday.

The ministry added that confirmed cases will no longer need to be hospitalised unless medically indicated, as the cases of Zika here have been mild so far.

The patients are presented with mild symptoms and have either recovered or recovering, the ministry added.

The update brought the total number of Zika infections in Singapore to 258 since the first locally transmitted case was reported on August 27.
