Marchenko advances as Kyrgios retires with hip injury at US Open

New York, Sep 4 (IANS) Australia's Nick Kyrgios, the No.14 seed, was forced to withdraw from his third-round tennis match at the US Open with Ukraine's Illya Marchenko due to a hip injury.

The 21-year-old Kyrgios, one of the rising stars on the tennis Tour, decided to retire at the start of the fourth set on Saturday night, reports Efe.

Marchenko was leading 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 when the Australian's right hip injury worsened.

"Not the way I wanted to end the last grand slam of the year. F--king sucks," Kyrgios said in a Twitter post after the match.

In other men's action, Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka, the No.3 seed, saved a match point against Britain's Daniel Evans and pulled off the win 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in a four-hour match on the court at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Britain's Andy Murray, the Rio Olympic gold medallist, struggled against Italy's Paolo Lorenzi, but finally prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes.

Japan's Kei Nishikori, the No.6 seed, rallied to beat French World No.42 Nicolas Mahut 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, knocked off Spain's David Ferrer, the No.11 seed, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-3.

The 27-year-old Del Potro will play Austria's Dominic Thiem, who beat Spain's Pablo Carre?o 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 16.

Del Potro, who received a wildcard into the last Grand Slam event of the year, won the silver medal at the Summer Olympics last month.
